Care & keeping

How often do alpaca toenails need trimming?

A

Short answer

Every 6-12 weeks for most alpacas on soft ground; less often on rocky terrain.

Check nails monthly. Overgrown nails curl and twist, changing how the alpaca stands and causing joint strain over time. Trimming takes a couple of minutes per animal with sharp hoof shears.
