Care & keeping

Can alpacas live in the cold and snow?

A

Short answer

Yes. Their fleece insulates superbly, and alpacas tolerate cold well with windbreaks, dry shelter, extra hay and unfrozen water.

Wind and wet are more dangerous than cold itself. Provide a dry, draft-free shelter, extra hay in cold snaps (fermentation keeps them warm), and heated water buckets.

Crias, seniors and recently shorn animals may need coats. In northern latitudes, young alpacas need vitamin D supplements in winter.
