Short answer
No. Alpacas are herd animals and become severely stressed alone. Keep at least two, and ideally three or more.
A lone alpaca lives in constant fear because, to a prey animal, being alone means being vulnerable. Stress lowers immunity and appetite and can shorten its life.
The minimum is two compatible alpacas; three gives more security and means no animal is left alone if one is sick or dies. Other species (sheep, goats, llamas) are not a full substitute for alpaca companions.
