Short answer
A common guideline is 5-10 alpacas per acre of good pasture, depending on rainfall and grass growth. With hay feeding, small herds can live on less.
Alpacas are light grazers with soft feet, so they are gentler on pasture than sheep or goats. In high-rainfall areas with lush grass, up to 8-10 alpacas per acre may be sustainable; in dry regions, plan on fewer and feed hay much of the year.
Even on small acreage, divide land into at least two paddocks for rotation, and plan a dry lot or sacrifice area for wet seasons. Use our stocking-rate calculator for your situation.
