Short answer
They need shelter from wind, rain, snow and summer sun — usually a three-sided run-in shed facing away from prevailing winds, with roughly 20-40 sq ft per alpaca.
A full barn is helpful for birthing, shearing and sick animals, but a well-built three-sided shelter is enough for daily living in most climates. Good ventilation matters more than warmth.
In hot climates, shade and airflow (fans) are as important as winter protection.
