How to Trim Alpaca Toenails (Step by Step)

How often to trim alpaca toenails, the tools you need, how to hold the foot, how much to cut, and what to do if you cut too short.

Alpacas have two toes on each foot, each with a toenail that grows continuously. On soft pasture nails don’t wear down, so most alpacas need trimming every 6–12 weeks.

Why it matters

Overgrown nails curl over the pad or twist sideways. That changes how the alpaca stands, strains joints and tendons, and can cause lameness — especially in older animals and crias with growing legs.

What you need

  • Sharp hoof shears or garden-style toenail trimmers with straight blades
  • A helper (at least while learning)
  • A catch pen and halter
  • Antiseptic spray and blood-stop powder, just in case

Step-by-step

  1. Catch and hold the alpaca calmly in a catch pen, with a companion nearby. See handling.
  2. Start with a front foot. Stand facing the alpaca’s rear, slide your hand down the leg and lift the foot by bending the knee, holding the lower leg (not the toes).
  3. Clean the foot so you can see where nail meets pad.
  4. Trim the nail level with the pad, cutting from the heel toward the tip in small snips. The trimmed nail should not extend beyond the pad.
  5. Trim the sides if the nail curls under the pad.
  6. Shape the tip so it is slightly rounded and the two toes are even.
  7. Repeat for the other feet. Back feet: stand to the side, lift the foot backward, and hold it close to your body.

Dark nails hide the quick (blood supply). Take thin slices and stop when the nail looks moist or pinkish.

If you cut too short

A little bleeding is not serious. Apply blood-stop powder or firm pressure, keep the alpaca on clean, dry ground and check the next day for lameness or infection.

Tips

  • Trim after rain or in the morning when nails are softer.
  • Trim little and often rather than rarely and drastically.
  • Give some firm ground or gravel areas so nails wear naturally.
  • Shearing day is a good time to trim thoroughly while animals are restrained.
