Alpaca Vaccination Schedule: CDT, Rabies and More

Which vaccines alpacas need, when to vaccinate crias, adults and pregnant females, injection technique, record keeping and regional vaccines to discuss with your vet.

Vaccination needs for alpacas are simple compared with many livestock — but because vaccines are mostly used extra-label in camelids, build your program with a vet who knows alpacas.

Core vaccine: CDT

CDT protects against Clostridium perfringens types C and D (enterotoxemia) and tetanus. It is recommended for virtually all alpacas.

Who Typical timing (confirm with your vet)
Crias First dose around 2–3 months of age, booster 3–4 weeks later
Adults Booster once a year (some vets advise twice yearly in high-risk herds)
Pregnant females Booster about 4–6 weeks before the due date, so crias receive antibodies in colostrum
New arrivals with unknown history Two doses 3–4 weeks apart

Some farms use a broader multivalent clostridial vaccine (e.g., 7- or 8-way); ask your vet whether it’s needed in your area.

Regional vaccines to discuss

  • Rabies — recommended by many vets where rabies is common in wildlife, using a killed vaccine (extra-label in camelids).
  • Leptospirosis — in some wet regions or herds with problems.
  • West Nile virus and EEE — equine vaccines are sometimes used extra-label in high-risk areas; evidence in camelids is limited.

Giving injections

  • Most vaccines are given subcutaneously (under the skin), often in the area behind the elbow or on the side of the neck, where there’s little fleece. Your vet can show you.
  • Use a new needle for each animal to avoid spreading blood-borne infections like Mycoplasma haemolamae.
  • Store vaccines refrigerated and never use expired or frozen vaccine.
  • Watch animals for 30 minutes afterward; mild swelling at the site is common, but call the vet for breathing difficulty or collapse.

Record keeping

Record the date, product, lot number, dose and site for each animal. A simple spreadsheet or herd app works. Combine vaccinations with shearing day or toenail trims to reduce handling.

Frequently asked questions

Do alpacas need yearly shots? At least a yearly CDT booster in most herds; others depend on your region.

Can I vaccinate alpacas myself? Many owners do after training from their vet, who should design the program.
