Short answer
Usually you are caught in the crossfire, or the alpaca feels threatened, cornered or is being handled roughly. Over-handled bottle babies may also lose their respect for humans.
Look at the situation: is it feeding time? Are you restraining the animal for shots or toenails? Is it a pregnant female near a male? These are the classic triggers.
Calm, quiet handling, working in a small catch pen rather than chasing, and avoiding the head and face all reduce spitting. If one alpaca targets people regularly, ask an experienced breeder to assess its behavior.
