Short answer
Humming is the alpaca's everyday voice: it signals curiosity, mild worry, discomfort, or contact between a mother and her cria.
You'll hear humming when alpacas are moved to a new place, separated from friends, when a mother calls her baby, or when they're curious about something new. A herd that hums constantly may be stressed.
Alpacas also make an alarm call (a loud bray), a 'clucking' sound, screams during fights, and males make a unique gargling 'orgle' while mating.
