Why do alpacas lie flat on their side?

A

Short answer

Usually they are sunbathing or relaxing. Brief periods lying flat with legs stretched out are normal; prolonged lying with other signs may indicate colic or illness.

Alpacas often lie on their side with legs extended on sunny mornings to warm up, or on cool ground in the heat. It can look alarming the first time you see it.

Worry if the alpaca stays flat for long periods, can't get up, rolls repeatedly, or is not eating — those are signs of pain or illness.
