Short answer
Alpacas typically live 15 to 20 years, and well-cared-for individuals can reach 25 or more.
The average lifespan of an alpaca is 15-20 years. Good nutrition, parasite control, dental care and protection from heat stress all help alpacas reach the upper end of that range. The oldest documented alpacas have lived into their late twenties.
Alpacas are considered senior from about 12-14 years. Older animals may need softer feeds (soaked pellets, beet pulp, leafy hay), more frequent body-condition checks, and extra protection in extreme weather.
Because alpacas are long-lived herd animals, buying them is a commitment of potentially two decades — plan for that when you start.
