Short answer
They can be wonderful, low-impact pets for people with land, but they are livestock, not cuddly companions, and must be kept in groups.
Alpacas are quiet, clean, gentle and fascinating to watch. They don't need daily walks, rarely escape and are easy on pasture.
On the other hand they need annual shearing, regular toenail and parasite care, a livestock vet, and at least two companions. They usually don't like being hugged.
