Short answer
Not really. Alpacas will sound the alarm and may chase small predators like foxes, but they are prey animals themselves. Llamas and livestock guardian dogs make better guardians.
Alpacas are sometimes kept with sheep or poultry to deter foxes, and their alarm calls warn owners. Against dogs, coyotes or larger predators, alpacas need protection themselves.
