Short answer
Each alpaca produces only a few pounds of prime fiber a year, the global herd is small compared with sheep, and processing fine fiber is labor-intensive.
There are roughly a billion sheep in the world versus about 4-5 million alpacas. Alpaca is also warmer and softer for its weight, and fine grades are scarce.
