Fiber & shearing

Do alpacas need to be shorn?

A

Short answer

Yes. Alpacas grow fleece continuously and must be shorn once a year, usually in spring, or they risk heat stress.

Unlike some sheep breeds, alpacas don't shed. A professional shearer typically shears an alpaca in 5-10 minutes while it is restrained lying down. Shearing day is also a good time for toenails, teeth trimming and vaccinations.
