Breeding & crias

Should you castrate male alpacas, and when?

A

Short answer

Most males that won't be herdsires should be gelded. Many vets suggest waiting until about 18-24 months to allow normal skeletal development.

Castration makes males calmer and allows them to live with other geldings. Very early castration may lead to taller, straighter-legged animals and is associated with higher urinary stone risk, which is why many vets wait. Discuss timing with your vet.
