Through records, teeth and size. Permanent incisors erupt between about 2 and 3 years, and fighting teeth appear in males around 2-3 years.
Registered alpacas have birth dates on file. For unregistered animals, a vet can estimate age from tooth eruption and wear; after about 5 years estimates become rough.
