What causes it?

Low water intake, very coarse or stemmy hay, sand, plastic or foreign material, bezoars.

Risk factors

  • Frozen water troughs
  • Coarse mature hay
  • Older alpacas with worn teeth

How vets diagnose it

Physical exam, ultrasound, rectal exam in larger animals.

Treatment

Vet-administered fluids and laxatives; surgery if needed.

Do not wait to see if it improves. Camelids hide illness, and by the time signs are obvious the problem is often advanced. Call your veterinarian.
