- Emergency
- Also called
- Lactic acidosis, Carbohydrate overload
Signs & symptoms
- Bloating, discomfort
- Depression, staggering
- Watery, sour-smelling diarrhea (may be delayed)
- Dehydration, recumbency, death

What causes it?
Rapid fermentation of starch to lactic acid after alpacas break into a feed bin or are fed a big grain meal.
Risk factors
- Unsecured feed rooms
- Sudden diet changes
How vets diagnose it
History and fore-stomach fluid pH testing.
Treatment
Emergency vet care: antacids, fluids, sometimes surgical emptying of the fore-stomach.
Do not wait to see if it improves. Camelids hide illness, and by the time signs are obvious the problem is often advanced. Call your veterinarian.
Prevention
- Lock feed rooms and bins
- Introduce any concentrate gradually
- Prefer forage-based diets
