How to Wash and Care for Alpaca Sweaters, Socks and Blankets

Hand-washing alpaca, machine-wash settings, drying flat, removing pills, storing safely from moths, and reviving stretched alpaca knitwear.

Alpaca garments last for decades with simple care. Because alpaca has no lanolin and resists odors, it needs washing less often than you might think.

How often to wash

Air garments between wears; spot-clean small marks. Wash sweaters only every 5–10 wears or when soiled. Socks need more frequent washing.

Hand washing (best)

  1. Fill a basin with cool or lukewarm water and a little wool wash or gentle shampoo.
  2. Submerge the garment and gently squeeze — don’t rub, twist or wring.
  3. Soak 10–15 minutes.
  4. Rinse in water of the same temperature (temperature shocks cause felting).
  5. Press out water, then roll in a towel to remove more.

Machine washing

Only if the label allows: use a wool or hand-wash cycle, cold water, low spin, wool detergent and a mesh bag.

Drying

  • Dry flat on a towel or rack, reshaping to the original size.
  • Keep out of direct sun and away from radiators.
  • Never tumble dry.

Pilling and stretching

  • Remove pills with a fabric comb or sweater shaver.
  • Alpaca can stretch with wear because it has less elasticity than wool. Wash and dry flat to reshape; a light steam helps.
  • Hang scarves but fold sweaters.

Storage

  • Store clean — moths are attracted to food and body oils.
  • Fold in breathable cotton bags or boxes with cedar or lavender.
  • Check stored items every few months.
