The camelid heat-stress rule
Camelid veterinarians use a simple index: temperature in °F + relative humidity in %.
| Index | Risk | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Under 120 | Comfortable | Normal care |
| 120–150 | Caution | Shade, airflow, water; watch heavy-fleeced animals |
| 150–180 | High risk | Fans, wet bellies and legs, no handling or transport |
| Over 180 | Danger | Active cooling for the whole herd; vet for any animal over 104°F (40°C) |
Full-fleeced, dark-colored, obese, old and late-pregnant alpacas are most at risk. Learn the signs in our heat stress guide, and see how many high-risk months your county has in the local climate guides.
