Signs & symptoms

  • Intermittent diarrhea
  • Weight loss and poor condition
  • Poor growth in young animals

What causes it?

Trichuris species lay thick-walled eggs that can remain infective in the environment for several years.

Risk factors

  • Long-used pastures and dry lots
  • Heavy contamination around dung piles

How vets diagnose it

Fecal flotation; eggs are shed intermittently and may be missed on a single sample.

Treatment

Your vet may prescribe a multi-day dewormer course; whipworms are often harder to clear than other worms.

Prevention

  • Remove dung piles regularly
  • Rest heavily contaminated paddocks
  • Repeat fecal tests to confirm success

Background

Trichuris, often referred to as whipworms or the silent serpent, is a genus of parasitic helminths from the roundworm family Trichuridae. The name whipworm refers to the shape of the worm; they look like whips with wider "handles" at the posterior end. From Wikipedia — “Trichuris”, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.
