What causes it?

Gestation shorter than about 320 days, placental problems, maternal illness.

Risk factors

  • Maternal illness or stress
  • Twins (very rare)

How vets diagnose it

Physical exam and gestation length.

Treatment

Vet care: warmth, colostrum or plasma, careful feeding, joint support.

Do not wait to see if it improves. Camelids hide illness, and by the time signs are obvious the problem is often advanced. Call your veterinarian.
