Signs & symptoms
- Visible bites on legs, neck and hindquarters
- Shock: weakness, pale gums
- Hidden wounds under the fleece

Related symptom guides: Swollen Leg or Joint, Sudden Death in an Alpaca.
What causes it?
Loose dogs, coyotes, foxes (crias), mountain lions, bears and wolves.
Risk factors
- Inadequate fencing
- Neighborhood dogs
- Crias and lone animals
How vets diagnose it
Full-body examination after clipping fleece.
Treatment
Call your vet; control bleeding with pressure; keep the alpaca calm and warm. Antibiotics and tetanus prophylaxis are usually needed.
Do not wait to see if it improves. Camelids hide illness, and by the time signs are obvious the problem is often advanced. Call your veterinarian.
Prevention
- 5 ft (1.5 m) non-climb woven-wire fencing
- Livestock guardian dogs or llamas
- Lock animals in at night in high-predator areas
