What causes it?

Toxic ornamentals (yew, oleander, rhododendron, pieris), wilted cherry and red maple leaves, weeds in hay, and garden clippings.

Risk factors

  • Hungry animals in new pastures
  • Hedge and garden clippings thrown over fences
  • Storm-damaged trees
  • Weedy hay

How vets diagnose it

History, plant samples and stomach contents.

Treatment

Call your vet immediately. Bring a sample of the plant. Activated charcoal or specific antidotes may help some poisonings.

Do not wait to see if it improves. Camelids hide illness, and by the time signs are obvious the problem is often advanced. Call your veterinarian.

Prevention

  • Walk every paddock and fence line and remove toxic plants
  • Never feed clippings
  • Check paddocks after storms
