Alpaca Minerals & Supplements: Selenium, Zinc, Vitamin D and More

Which minerals and vitamins alpacas need, why camelid-specific minerals matter, selenium by region, vitamin D for crias, zinc for skin, and supplements to avoid.

Hay and pasture rarely supply every mineral and vitamin an alpaca needs. A good camelid-specific loose mineral fills the gaps — and choosing the wrong product can cause deficiency or toxicity.

Why “camelid-specific”?

  • Sheep minerals contain little or no copper because sheep are copper-sensitive. Fed long term, they can leave alpacas short on copper.
  • Cattle and goat minerals may contain too much copper for camelids and sometimes ionophores (monensin) that are toxic to camelids.
  • Camelid formulas balance selenium, zinc, copper, vitamin E and vitamin D for alpacas.

Offer minerals loose in a covered feeder, free choice. Alpacas’ soft tongues can’t lick hard blocks well, and biting blocks can break teeth.

Key nutrients

Nutrient Why it matters Notes
Selenium & vitamin E Muscle, immunity, fertility Many regions are low; deficiency causes white muscle disease. Selenium has a narrow safety margin — don’t stack products.
Vitamin D Bone growth Crias and juveniles in northern latitudes need winter supplementation to prevent rickets.
Zinc Skin and fiber Low zinc is linked to zinc-responsive dermatosis.
Copper Fleece pigment, blood Both deficiency and toxicity occur.
Calcium & phosphorus Bones, milk, urinary health Keep Ca:P about 1.2–2:1; high phosphorus feeds raise urinary stone risk.
Salt Water intake Usually in the mineral mix; encourages drinking.
Iodine Thyroid Supplied by mineral; avoid excess kelp.

Selenium by region

Large parts of North America have selenium-poor soils — the Pacific Northwest, the Great Lakes, the Northeast and much of the Atlantic Southeast — while parts of the Great Plains are adequate or high. Each of our state and county guides shows the local selenium status. Ask your vet to blood-test a few animals before changing supplements.

Vitamin D for crias

At latitudes above about 35–40°, UVB from winter sunlight is too weak for vitamin D synthesis. Many vets recommend vitamin D for crias and young stock every 1–2 months from autumn to spring. Your county guide lists the recommended months.

Other supplements

  • Camelid pellets supply minerals plus protein for breeding stock.
  • Black oil sunflower seeds (BOSS) — 1–2 tablespoons a day for fleece condition and vitamin E. See BOSS.
  • Probiotics — sometimes used after illness or antibiotics; evidence is limited.
  • Electrolytes — useful in heat waves and for sick animals.

Supplements to avoid or question

  • Garlic and “natural dewormers” — no proven benefit and garlic can cause anemia.
  • Extra copper boluses without liver testing.
  • Multiple selenium products at once.
  • Medicated cattle or poultry feeds.

Frequently asked questions

Can alpacas use horse or sheep mineral? Not as a long-term substitute. Use a camelid-specific mineral.

Do alpacas need salt blocks? Loose mineral with salt is better than blocks.
